This poem is based on the passage in the Talmud that states: Two ministering
angels, one good one bad, go with a person on Shabbat eve, on his way
home from the synagogue. When he arrives at his home, if he finds the
candles lit, the table set and the beds made, the good angel says, "May
it be G"ds will that next Shabbat should also be like this,"
the bad angel must respond with "Amen. If instead the home is not
found ready for Shabbat, the bad angel says, "May it be G'ds will
that next Shabbat will also be like this. The good angel must respond
: "Amen."
ESHET
HAIL (A WOMAN OF VALOR)
(Proverbs, 31,10-31)
- Go Back -
Eshet Hail is recited especially on Shabbat, for the Torah was given on
Shabbat. Another explanation why it is recited on Shabbat is offered in
the works of Metiv Naggen, Shabbat is referred to as the bride of Israel
(Lecha Dodi). Rashi gives it a figurative interpretation representing
A woman of valor as being the Torah, who can find?-a person is fortunate
who becomes knowledgeable in her. His wealth will not be lacking, -he
will reap the fruits of embracing in Torah. She seeks wool and flax, -the
Torah seeks to provide those who study it with basic necessities. Give
her from the fruit of her hands,-the time will come when those who have
delved in the Torah will attain glory and greatness.
KIDDUSH
FOR SHABBAT
- Go Back -
The Kiddush for Shabbat (the blessing for the Sabbath) fullfills the Biblical
commandment "Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it." (Exodus
20,8) Why were the two words "Yom Hashishi" The sixth day (Genesis
1, 31): precede "Vi'chooloo" (were finished) (Genesis 2,1).
One explanation is that the first letter of the two words begin with (Hebrew)
h and v respectively, and the first two letters in the next two words
begin with u and v respectively. Combined the four letters form the Name
of G'd. (Kaf Hahai'im)
HANUKAH
MENORAH
- Go Back -
The inscription in the Hanukah Menorah is Psalm 30 which is a song for
the dedication of the Temple by David. It is recited in the ritual of
lighting the Hanukah Menorah. The two seals on the bottom of the picture
are the blessings precede the song of dedication and are recited for the
lighting of the Menorah.
Insights into the word Hanukah: The root of the word in Hebrew means (Hinuch)
dedication. In breaking down the word into syllables, Hanu in Hebrew means
rested, and Ka is the number 25. They rested on the 25 (of Kislev) which
is the first day of Hanukah.
